The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The perentie is a large monitor lizard of arid Australia. It lives in desert landscapes, rocky hills and scrub, using crevices and excavated shelters. Pale spots on darker skin form a pattern matching stones and dry ground.
It actively searches for food by day. Reptiles, birds, mammals, insects and carrion allow it to use varied desert resources. Its forked tongue collects chemical information. Strong limbs and claws help investigate hiding places, excavate soil and negotiate uneven rocks.
It adjusts activity to temperature, alternating feeding with rest in sheltered places. Underground shelter reduces exposure to extreme heat. Females lay eggs in the ground. Young begin life independently, taking smaller foods than adults.
