The South African springhare has reddish fur, extremely powerful hind limbs and a dark-tipped tail. It lives in dry, open southern African landscapes. It shelters in a burrow by day and moves in leaps while seeking food at night.
Forelimbs dig, while hind limbs provide powerful propulsion during leaps. The burrow entrance may be closed with soil from inside, sheltering the resting animal.
It eats grasses, roots and other plant parts, sometimes also insects. It uses several shelters nearby.
