The Patagonian mara (Dolichotis patagonum) is a large rodent of Argentina's dry steppes and scrub. Long limbs, elongated ears and swift running make it resemble a cross between a hare and a small hoofed mammal. It belongs to the cavy family, however, rather than the hares and rabbits.
It feeds chiefly by day on grasses and herbs. Open country offers a clear view of its surroundings. When threatened it can accelerate abruptly and make long leaps, using powerful limbs to escape predators.
Adults form lasting pairs, maintaining vocal contact and jointly defending the space they use. Young from several pairs may grow up in a shared colonial burrow. Parents visit and help watch the surrounding area.
