The palmate newt is a small amphibian with a brownish back and pale underside. Breeding males have a thread-like tail tip and webbed hind feet. A smooth, unspotted throat helps distinguish it from the similar smooth newt.
It uses shallow waters and may stay on land beneath vegetation and wood outside breeding. It places eggs individually on leaves. Larvae have external gills that disappear during metamorphosis.
