The Pacific white-sided dolphin has a contrasting dark back, pale belly and distinct grey flank areas. It inhabits temperate North Pacific waters both coastally and farther offshore.
It forms large, active groups whose members may jointly hunt herring and anchovy schools. It also eats squid. It frequently leaps and rides ships' bow waves. Large gatherings are particularly conspicuous where abundant small fish attract many marine predators.
