The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Orinoco crocodile comes from the Orinoco basin in Colombia and Venezuela. It inhabits large rivers, oxbow lakes, lagoons and seasonally flooded savannas. A relatively elongated snout and powerful tail suit the semi-aquatic life of a large predator.
It catches fish, birds, reptiles and mammals, usually using concealment in water and surprise. Eyes and nostrils remain near the surface even with the body submerged. Coming ashore allows basking; returning to the river provides opportunities to rest and travel between feeding areas.
Females lay eggs on sandy banks. Availability of these sites changes with river flow and season. Young need sheltered waterside areas until their size reduces vulnerability to predators.
