Omura’s whale is a slender baleen whale of warm Indo-Pacific waters. It was not consistently distinguished from similar whales for a long time; its scientific description was published in 2003.
It feeds on krill and small schooling fish, filtering them from water with baleen. It is usually observed alone or in loose gatherings. Distribution and seasonal movements are still being studied, and correct identification matters greatly when analysing older observations.
