The okapi, Okapia johnstoni, is a forest relative of the giraffe from the humid equatorial forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its dark body contrasts with pale horizontal stripes on the hindquarters and legs. Males carry small, skin-covered ossicones.
It feeds in the forest understorey on leaves, shoots, fruit, ferns and fungi. A long, grasping tongue draws plant material into the mouth and can also clean around the eyes and ears. Okapis are secretive and mostly solitary.
