The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The ocelot inhabits varied American landscapes from the southern United States to northern Argentina. It selects forests, mangroves and dense scrub. Cover matters more than a single vegetation type. It more often crosses open spaces at night or in cloudy weather.
It hunts rodents and other available vertebrates, including birds and reptiles. It moves slowly, using smell and hearing to seek prey. It approaches patiently, then attacks rapidly. Food availability and the layout of dense vegetation affect route choice.
It usually lives alone. It conveys information to neighbours through scent and calls, reducing the need for direct encounters. The female rears kittens in shelter. Young remain in her care, gradually learning their surroundings and behaviours needed to obtain food independently.
