The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) is a marsupial of southwestern Australia. It inhabits dry eucalypt forests and open woodland. A slender snout, bushy tail and pale crossbands on its flanks and rump distinguish it from many other small mammals.
It specialises in eating termites. It seeks them in shallow passages beneath the ground and adjusts activity to insect availability. Unlike many Australian marsupials it feeds mainly by day. A long tongue helps gather small prey.
It usually lives alone. Hollow logs and dense vegetation provide shelters from predators. The female lacks a typical enclosed pouch, although young develop in the marsupial manner. Foxes and feral cats are major threats, so conservation combines forest preservation with reducing introduced-predator pressure.
