Northern elephant seal — size comparison — facts and sources
The northern elephant seal lives in the northeastern Pacific and breeds along California’s coasts among other places. Adult males have substantial necks and enlarged noses and are considerably larger than females.
It spends most of the year on long feeding journeys. It hunts fish, sharks and squid, regularly diving hundreds of metres. It returns ashore to breed. Males compete in loud colonies, while females give birth and nurse young before returning to the ocean.
