The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) is a venomous eastern US snake. It inhabits rocky wooded slopes, wetlands and sites offering cover. Darker crossbands against a copper-brown background resemble hourglasses.
The pattern conceals its body among leaves while the head faces a potential prey route. It chiefly hunts at night in summer and more often by day in spring and autumn. It waits for prey in concealment.
Heat-sensitive organs help detect warm animals. Mice are its main food, alongside other small animals. Females give birth to live young. Their yellow tail tips lure prey; this colour fades in adults. It winters in rock crevices, sometimes with other snakes.
