The North Atlantic right whale has a massive body without a dorsal fin, a broad head and distinctive patches of thickened skin on the muzzle. Its double blow often forms a V. The arrangement of these callosities helps researchers identify individuals.
It feeds on small zooplankton, chiefly copepods retained by baleen. It moves between seasonal feeding and breeding grounds, alone or in small groups. It is especially vulnerable to fishing-gear entanglement and ship collisions because its routes cross heavily used coastal waters.
