The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is an American mammal recognised by bony armour covered with a horny layer. It inhabits forests, scrub and meadows, particularly where soil permits digging. Movable bands in the middle armour allow the body to bend during movement.
It feeds mainly on insects, larvae and other invertebrates. It finds food primarily through keen smell, rooting in litter and soil. Powerful claws help extract prey and excavate sheltering burrows.
It usually leads a solitary, nocturnal life. It can briefly hold its breath while walking underwater. Its reproductive biology is also distinctive: the female usually bears four identical young developing from one fertilised egg. Offspring initially use burrow cover and maternal care before independently exploring the surroundings.
