The Nile crocodile is a large, semiaquatic predator of African rivers, lakes and wetlands. It occurs across extensive parts of sub-Saharan Africa, in the Nile Basin and on Madagascar. A powerful tail propels it through water, while high-set eyes and nostrils allow it to observe its surroundings when mostly submerged.
It hunts by ambush, taking fish, birds and other vertebrates within reach. Prey changes with the crocodile’s age and size. Regular basking on land helps regulate body temperature.
The female digs a nest in the ground and remains nearby. She responds to hatchling calls, helps the young leave the nest and reach water. Small crocodiles face many more predators than adults.
