New Zealand sea lion — size comparison — facts and sources
The New Zealand sea lion breeds chiefly on the subantarctic Auckland and Campbell Islands. Breeding sites are increasingly reappearing on New Zealand’s main islands. Ashore it uses sandy beaches and nearby land; males are much larger and darker than females.
In cold seas it hunts fish, squid, octopuses and crustaceans. Feeding trips may extend far from colonies. Females return to young between trips, combining care with intensive feeding.
