The naked mole-rat lives almost entirely underground. Although its skin appears bare, small sensory hairs help it navigate in darkness. Underground plant parts are its most important food.
It forms colonies in which few individuals breed, while the others cooperate in maintaining the tunnel system and caring for the young. The group can jointly reduce heat loss. Tunnels lead to feeding, resting and rearing sites.
Individuals use a shared passage network and move loosened soil away while digging. The protruding incisors work outside closed lips, reducing the entry of soil into the mouth.
