Black-necked spitting cobra — size comparison — facts and sources
The black-necked spitting cobra is an African snake with highly variable colouring. Some individuals are almost black, while others have paler body areas. Its name refers to the dark neck region. Like other cobras it can expand the front of its body into a prominent warning hood.
It inhabits extensive sub-Saharan African areas. It uses retreats in varied landscapes and can climb. Its diet includes rodents, birds, lizards, frogs and other snakes. Activity timing depends on local conditions; it occurs both by day and night.
Spitting venom is primarily defensive behaviour directed at an attacker. It is not used to catch distant prey. It may reach around two metres long, but individuals from different regions vary in size and appearance.
