Steppe polecat — size comparison — facts and sources
The steppe polecat inhabits steppes, semi-deserts, pastures and fields in Europe and Asia. It has an elongated body with straw-coloured fur, darker legs and a facial mask. It hunts mainly rodents, but also birds and other small animals.
It hunts chiefly at night, hiding by day in burrows, crevices and dense vegetation. It also uses shelters left by other animals. Smell and hearing help it track rodents in open landscapes. When prey is abundant it may store some for later. Moving through open terrain, it can leap and use rodent passages. In winter it may change its feeding area.
