Mule deer — size comparison — facts and sources

The mule deer inhabits North American mountains, forests, prairies, scrub and dry plateaus. Large mule-like ears give its name. Males have characteristically forking antlers. Winter coats are greyer, and the tail tip remains dark.

It eats leaves, shoots, herbs, fruit and grasses. It may form groups outside breeding. During escape it often springs from all four feet together, making high bounds that help cross uneven ground.
