The mountain zebra inhabits dry mountains, plateaus and rocky slopes in southern Africa. Hard hooves help on stony ground. The belly remains white, and rump stripes form a transverse grid. A skin fold or dewlap beneath the throat is characteristic.
It chiefly eats tough grasses and occasionally leaves. Small family groups led by a stallion move between scattered feeding areas.
