Mountain hare — size comparison — facts and sources

The mountain hare lives in cold landscapes of northern Eurasia and parts of Europe's mountains. It uses tundra, heathland and sheltered vegetation patches. Populations differ in their living conditions, and snow cover affects access to feeding grounds and shelter.

It eats herbaceous plants and, during colder months, also shoots and bark. Seasonal coat replacement is linked to the day–night cycle. Winter colour becomes white in many populations, but the course of the change also depends on local climate.

The young are born furred and with open eyes, initially remaining hidden between nursing visits. The female rears them. Dense fur and sheltered resting places help reduce heat loss.
