The mountain gorilla is an eastern gorilla subspecies inhabiting cool forests in the Virunga and Bwindi regions. It uses cloud and bamboo forests. Long, dense hair protects against cold high-altitude nights. Adult males are more substantial than females and have silver saddles across their backs.
It eats leaves, shoots, stems, roots and fruit. Powerful jaws process fibrous plant parts. It lives in groups led by a mature male, supporting the body with its forelimbs as well while moving on the ground.
