Carpet python — size comparison — facts and sources

The carpet python is a characteristic snake of Australia and parts of New Guinea. A long body and prehensile tail allow movement on the ground and among branches.

It occupies forests, scrub and rocks and sometimes occurs near homes. It hunts small mammals and birds, often waiting at a suitable site. Body coils subdue prey and heat-sensitive organs detect warm-blooded animals.

Females lay eggs and coil around them during embryonic development. Hatchlings are independent. Size varies considerably: many remain below two and a half metres, while the largest are markedly longer.
