The moose is the largest living member of the deer family, associated with northern forests, scrub and wetlands. It has very long legs, a heavy body and an elongated muzzle with a hanging upper lip. Adult males carry antlers, often broad and palmate, which are shed annually. Size varies substantially between populations.
It feeds on leaves, shoots and herbaceous plants. In summer it readily enters water to eat aquatic vegetation and cool down. Tree and shrub twigs become more important in winter. Long legs help it cross dense vegetation and wet ground.
Moose usually live alone or in small, loose gatherings. The most lasting bond is between a female and her calf. During the breeding season, males compete using calls, posture and antlers. Adult encounters are less regular outside that period.
