The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Mongolian gerbil lives on dry Asian steppes and semi-deserts. It digs burrows in soft soil, often beside plants whose roots stabilise the ground. Shelters have a nesting chamber and storage areas. Family groups use them in a climate with marked seasonal changes.
It feeds on grasses and other steppe plants, including wormwoods. During extreme heat and cold it reduces activity to save energy. Efficient water management helps it survive dry conditions. Sand baths maintain its coat.
Scent and individual contacts matter within the group. Hind-foot drumming may warn others of danger. During breeding the female rears successive litters, with young initially remaining in the nest. Independence develops with the transition from milk to solid food.
