The Mongolian gazelle lives on extensive steppes with cold winters and a short growing season. It selects plains and gently rolling grasslands. It continually moves in search of favourable pastures. Food availability and weather influence herd movements across this open landscape.
It is a herbivorous ruminant using grasses and other steppe plants. Food selection varies through the year. Animals must respond to brief green-vegetation abundance, summer drought and winter snow that can hinder feeding access.
It forms groups year-round, usually larger in winter than summer. Males compete for females during mating. Births concentrate in early summer, usually producing one calf. Timing may shift with preceding climatic conditions and local food availability.
