Common minke whale — size comparison — facts and sources
The common minke whale is among the smaller baleen whales. It has a slender body and distinct dorsal fin; the northern form has pale bands on its pectoral flippers. It occurs both near shore and in the open sea.
It feeds on krill, herring and other small fish, often lunging rapidly into shoals. It usually does not raise its tail flukes above water before diving. It moves seasonally between northern feeding areas.
