Megamouth shark — size comparison — facts and sources

The megamouth shark is a rarely observed open-ocean fish with a large, rounded head and very broad mouth. The first specimen known to science was caught off Hawaii in 1976, and the formal species description appeared in 1983.

It feeds on krill and other small plankton. Tracked individuals moved between deeper water by day and shallower layers at night, following food movements. Rare encounters mean its distribution and habits remain incompletely understood.
