Meerkat — size comparison — facts and sources

The meerkat (Suricata suricatta) is a small member of the mongoose family from dry areas of southern Africa. It inhabits semi-deserts, dry savannas and open ground with soil suitable for digging. A slender body, dark eye patches and striped back are distinctive features.

It eats chiefly invertebrates, supplemented by other small prey. It feeds by day, searching the ground and digging through soil. Strong forelimbs and claws help reach food hidden below the surface.

It lives in social groups using networks of burrows. Group members help care for young and keep in contact through calls. During foraging, some animals watch the surroundings, allowing an earlier response to danger. Older animals teach young how to handle prey: initially bringing dead or disabled scorpions, then increasingly active ones.
