The Mediterranean monk seal occurs in scattered populations in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic off northwestern Africa. It chooses rocky coasts, islands and sheltered bays. In many places it uses sea caves with water-facing entrances for resting and breeding.
It hunts fish, octopuses, squid and crustaceans, often searching near the bottom. It usually avoids busy stretches of shore, although historically it also used open beaches. Small, separated colonies depend heavily on access to quiet places where females can rear their young.
