Maxwell's duiker inhabits West Africa, using secondary forests, damp thickets and vegetation at the forest–savanna boundary. Dense undergrowth provides retreats and safe passages. It moves cautiously, and when disturbed can suddenly leap away and disappear among plants.

According to older accounts it is mainly active at night. It eats fruit, herbaceous plants, shrub leaves and fresh growth.

It may form pairs occupying shared space. Both sexes mark it with preorbital gland secretions, and individuals meeting one another rub their heads together. They also use repeated defecation sites.
