Matschie's tree-kangaroo inhabits mountain forests of the Huon Peninsula in Papua New Guinea. It spends much of its life in trees, using branches as feeding and resting sites. Its limb proportions differ from those of kangaroos moving mainly on the ground.
It eats primarily leaves, alternating short feeding periods with rest. Powerful limbs help it climb trunks, while its long tail aids balance. It may descend to the ground, but tree crowns form its main daily living space.
The female rears a young animal whose early development takes place in her pouch. The offspring later gradually learns arboreal routes. Preserving connected mountain forest patches facilitates access to feeding sites.
