The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The matamata (Chelus fimbriata) is a turtle of Amazonian waters, camouflaged among leaves and wood. It inhabits quiet waters with cover and plant debris.
Head shape, skin folds and an uneven shell surface resemble submerged leaves and pieces of wood.
It hunts chiefly fish, abruptly opening its mouth and sucking prey in with water. A long, tubular nose tip permits breathing with little exposure. Females lay eggs on land. Orinoco populations now separated as Chelus orinocensis were formerly included in this species.
