The markhor is a large wild mountain goat associated with rocky slopes and mountain forests. Males have long beards and spirally twisted horns. A powerful build and capable limbs allow movement over steep, uneven ground.
It eats grasses, herbs, leaves and young shoots. It lives in herds whose composition varies with sex and season; males may form bachelor groups. Male horns grow throughout life. Markhor means snake-eater, although the animal feeds on plants.
