Margay — size comparison — facts and sources

The margay is associated with Central and South American forests. It spends much time among branches, using trees for travel and rest. Agile limbs and mobile joints help it grip uneven supports. It can descend trunks headfirst.

It hunts small ground-dwelling and arboreal mammals, birds and other vertebrates. It also eats invertebrates, and fruit has been recorded in its food. Activity may occur at various times. In tree crowns it combines stalking with precise branch grasping and balance.

It usually travels alone, with partner contacts linked mainly to breeding. Knowledge of wild rearing remains incomplete. Much detailed observation comes from captivity. Forests provide not only prey but also retreats and continuous arboreal routes used by this cat.
