The Chinese pangolin is a mammal with overlapping keratin scales covering its back and tail. When threatened it can curl up, hiding its soft underside beneath the hard covering. It inhabits forests and scrub in East Asia and Himalayan regions, particularly hilly areas.
Secretive and chiefly nocturnal, it opens ant and termite nests with its forefeet, then collects insects with its long, sticky tongue. It uses burrows it digs itself or takes over from other animals.
