The Indian pangolin inhabits forests, dry scrub and hilly areas. Large keratin scales protect its back and broad tail, while its belly remains soft. When threatened it can curl up with the hard covering facing outwards.
An elongated tongue collects insects from their shelters, while strong claws expose ant and termite nests. It has no teeth with which to chew food. It usually spends the day in shelter, emerging to seek food chiefly at night.
