The Malayan tapir is the only living tapir native to Asia. It inhabits humid tropical forests, usually near water. Adults have stocky bodies with a pale saddle across the middle and rear, contrasting with a dark head and legs. Young look very different: pale stripes and spots cover their brown coats.
A short, flexible snout grasps leaves, shoots, twigs and fruit. Tapirs often feed after dark under forest cover and usually stay alone. They belong to the odd-toed ungulates, the same group of mammals as rhinoceroses and horses.
Copenhagen Zoo podaje 100–130 cm wysokości i 280–400 kg. Do planszy przyjęto zachowawcze 110 cm w barku. To wyraźnie więcej niż 100 kg masy, ale wysokością tapir pozostaje niższy od człowieka 170 cm.
