The bonnet macaque occurs in southern Indian forests and human-altered landscapes. Crown hairs radiate outwards into its characteristic cap. It moves on all fours on the ground and branches and is chiefly active by day.
It eats fruit, leaves and insects. Some groups live near settlements and temples, also using food made available by people.
Groups include both sexes and young; females usually remain near relatives, while males may change groups.
