Tapirus terrestris
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The lowland tapir inhabits tropical forests, wetlands, savannas and riverside scrub in South America. Adults are almost uniformly dark brown, while young have pale spots and stripes. The nose and upper lip form a short, mobile proboscis.
It uses this to select leaves, shoots, fruit and aquatic plants. Usually solitary, it swims and dives well, using rivers and wetlands beside forest feeding areas.
