Long-tailed weasel — size comparison — facts and sources

The long-tailed weasel inhabits varied areas of the Americas, including fields and small woodland complexes. It shelters in hollow trunks, stone piles and burrows, sometimes taken over from a prey animal. It hunts mainly small rodents.

Its slender body allows it to enter their passages, while proficient climbing and swimming broaden its feeding opportunities. It may also catch birds, amphibians and other vertebrates. Searching for rodents takes it underground and into other sheltered places.

It usually lives alone and responds aggressively to intruders. In northern populations the coat may turn white in winter; the dark tail tip remains distinctive.
