Long-tailed chinchilla — size comparison — facts and sources

The long-tailed chinchilla originates in rocky areas of Chile. Crevices and hollows between stones provide shelter while resting.

It feeds mainly on plants, selecting available grasses and seeds. Activity usually increases at night and dusk. It moves skilfully over rocks and may hold food with its front paws. Animals maintain vocal contact and respond to neighbours' presence.

The young are born more developed than those of many small rodents, with fur and open eyes. They still require maternal care and feeding. Long-term fur harvesting and habitat change are part of the species' history.
