Long-eared hedgehog — size comparison — facts and sources

The long-eared hedgehog inhabits dry steppes, deserts and scrub. By day it rests beneath rocks or in burrows it digs or takes over from other small mammals.

At night it seeks beetles, orthopterans and other invertebrates, sometimes supplemented by small vertebrates, eggs and plants. Good hearing and smell help locate prey.

Usually solitary, it may enter torpor according to conditions and hibernate in colder regions. Females raise young in sheltered refuges away from nocturnal feeding excursions.
