Loggerhead turtle — size comparison — facts and sources

The loggerhead turtle inhabits warm and temperate Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean waters. A large head and powerful jaws help break hard-shelled prey. It uses coastal shelves, bays and estuaries, also entering the open ocean during migrations.

Its diet includes crabs, bivalves, snails, sea urchins and other marine animals. Food varies with age and feeding site. Flipper-like limbs drive swimming, while the streamlined shell reduces drag. It surfaces regularly because it breathes air.

Females come onto sandy beaches to bury eggs. Hatchlings begin independent lives at sea, with early stages in different environments from later adult feeding grounds. Long migrations connect these habitats.
