Llama — size comparison — facts and sources

The llama is a domesticated South American camelid descended from the guanaco. It has an elongated head, long neck and characteristically curved ears. It is larger and less compact than an alpaca.

Its two-toed feet rest on soft pads rather than the broad, hard hooves typical of cattle. Andean origins link it to pastoral life and traditional pack transport. It eats grasses, leaves and other herbs.

It is a herd animal. Oval blood cells and high haemoglobin content help it function in thin Andean air. Many solid and patterned colours occur.
