The lion-tailed macaque inhabits wet forests of the Western Ghats in India. Much of its activity takes place in tree crowns. Forest continuity and access to fruiting plants influence the group's daily feeding and movement.
Fruit is important in its diet, supplemented by leaves, shoots, flowers, fungi and invertebrates. It can temporarily store food in its cheek pouches. Feeding places change as different trees fruit.
It lives in groups containing females and young and usually an adult male. It is active mainly by day. Vocal communication helps maintain contact and relationships with neighbouring groups.
