The lesser Egyptian jerboa inhabits sandy and stony deserts and semi-deserts. It spends the day in an underground burrow, sheltered from surface conditions. Its retreat may have side exits, with a nesting chamber at the end of the passage system.
After sunset it seeks seeds, grasses, roots and insects. It obtains much of its water from food. It moves by hopping on its hindlimbs, using its tail for balance. When it detects danger, fleeing and returning to the burrow are its primary protection.
It usually lives alone. The female rears young in the burrow before they begin feeding independently. In unfavourable conditions it may reduce activity. It grooms its fur through sand bathing.
