The lesser capybara occurs from eastern Panama through western Colombia to northwestern Venezuela. It is associated with water and riverside habitats. It resembles the larger capybara, but its own biology is less well known.
It is herbivorous, although its detailed dietary composition has not been well described. Waterside habitat provides access to vegetation and cover. Accounts describe a cautious animal feeding in small groups.
Outside the Panama Canal Zone, predominantly nocturnal activity has been reported. In Venezuela, year-round breeding and litters of several young have been observed. The species is hunted for meat.
