Panthera pardus
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The leopard inhabits forests, savannas, mountains and dry scrub in Africa and Asia. It has a slender, muscular body, a long tail and a rosetted coat. Rosette size and background colour vary between populations. In melanistic individuals, called black panthers, the rosettes remain visible in suitable light.
It ambushes diverse prey, from small vertebrates to ungulates, using vegetation to approach before a short attack. An excellent climber, it may carry prey into trees to hinder access by larger predators. It is often active at night, especially near people.
Adults usually live alone. Scent marks, scratches and distinctive calls communicate their presence. Females raise cubs independently and move them between hiding places. Older cubs begin accompanying their mother and gradually learn to find food.
Samce ważą według Animal Diversity Web około 31–65 kg, dlatego lampart nie jest przedstawiany jako zwierzę przekraczające 100 kg. Do porównania przyjęto 65 cm w barku, punkt porównawczy w zakresie 50–70 cm z karty identyfikacyjnej CITES. Linia skali biegnie do barku, nie do czubka głowy.
